Old photos
Greg Krueger, another photographer from high school. I shot this in the schools darkroom one morning just trying to finish off a roll of film. The harsh lighting made for some real neat results when I decided to try solarizing a color print by exposing it to light while it was developing. This is the same photo that was used for the torn up image in the album. The gunk on the image really upsets me - this was entered into a contest I didn't want to enter it into...and they lost it. I finally got it back about 6 months later than promised and it had glue and bits of someone elses artwork stuck to it. Since solarization is such a touch process this was a one of a kind print and I was real upset to have it damaged like that. Someday I need to do a high quality scan (this was still in a mount so it's a bit soft) and clean the goo off of this image.
I can't remember the names of anyone in this photo, we were all taking part in a journalism workshop at Ball State in ... umm ... it was probably 1991 I'm guessing. I still have the negative somewhere and that would help me figure out the date. The photo won me an award. In part because I was able to explain that the blown out lamp was on purpose to help draw peoples eyes into the photo. The divided black and white background that give it a kind of "us against them" feel, even though it's euchre so the split isn't by team, and that was entirely by chance. The neat thing about the award is that it made me eligible for an internship the following summer at the workshop which was a great opportunity. Justin (pictured else where in this gallery pulling on his face) was my roommate the week this was taken. I also remember seeing my first digital cameras in person that week. The workshop even had a Canon Xapshot on loan, though technically that was an analog camera that happened to store it's images digitally. It had more in common with a camcorder than a modern digital camera.
A mistake. I was learning color printing and could not get this one right. In frustration I tore it up and tossed it in the sink. A little later some red dye was splashed on it accidentally and the pieces just happened to land like this. I mounted it up with some red paper in the back to make it look like it was on purpose and not a mistake.
