Old photos

Some old photos I've come across. Most of these are scans of prints and I've chosen to leave in defects that are not a result of the digitization process. Since these are prints I think some of the flaws help define them as prints - I still have the original negs if I choose to create digital images out of them at some point. But for me there's a fairly big difference between a print and a digital image - leaving damage and borders in the scans just seems right to me in an archival sense on these prints. If I ever have way too much time on my hands it would be fun to go back to the original negs, scan them, and create digital "perfect" versions of many of these.

  • Justin in high school. He was a year below me, note the 1994 class ring. I don't think he can still do this though! I recently got back in touch with Justin and learned that he's a Minister now. I hope the image brings as many good memories for him as it does for me.

  • Greg Krueger, another photographer from high school. I shot this in the schools darkroom one morning just trying to finish off a roll of film. The harsh lighting made for some real neat results when I decided to try solarizing a color print by exposing it to light while it was developing. This is the same photo that was used for the torn up image in the album. The gunk on the image really upsets me - this was entered into a contest I didn't want to enter it into...and they lost it. I finally got it back about 6 months later than promised and it had glue and bits of someone elses artwork stuck to it. Since solarization is such a touch process this was a one of a kind print and I was real upset to have it damaged like that. Someday I need to do a high quality scan (this was still in a mount so it's a bit soft) and clean the goo off of this image.

  • Arie Luyendyk at the Cleveland 500 in 1990. One of the first photos I ever shot/processed/printed myself.

  • My siser Sarah in college posing for a fashion assignment. The tilt was on purpose...but the scaner tried to correct part of it so this isn't quite how it was meant to be viewed. Oh and again the mount this was on threw off the scanner so it's a lot softer than the real print.

  • I can't remember the names of anyone in this photo, we were all taking part in a journalism workshop at Ball State in ... umm ... it was probably 1991 I'm guessing. I still have the negative somewhere and that would help me figure out the date. The photo won me an award. In part because I was able to explain that the blown out lamp was on purpose to help draw peoples eyes into the photo. The divided black and white background that give it a kind of "us against them" feel, even though it's euchre so the split isn't by team, and that was entirely by chance. The neat thing about the award is that it made me eligible for an internship the following summer at the workshop which was a great opportunity. Justin (pictured else where in this gallery pulling on his face) was my roommate the week this was taken. I also remember seeing my first digital cameras in person that week. The workshop even had a Canon Xapshot on loan, though technically that was an analog camera that happened to store it's images digitally. It had more in common with a camcorder than a modern digital camera.

  • Another shot from my fashion class. While I won't try to claim the original was perfectally focused - it's no where near as bad as this scan makes it appear.

  • Shillouette of Claire (her last name escapes me at this time) playing Tennis taken for the highschool yearbook. The scan really didn't do this print justice.

  • A horrible scan of a medicore print that somehow managed to win a number of awards.

  • Self portrait taken my senior year of High School. I shot this in a small cave at Whips Ledges in Hinckly Ohio lit only with a single off camera flash. There is glare in the scan which is due to my less than optimal scanner setup - not the print.

  • A mistake. I was learning color printing and could not get this one right. In frustration I tore it up and tossed it in the sink. A little later some red dye was splashed on it accidentally and the pieces just happened to land like this. I mounted it up with some red paper in the back to make it look like it was on purpose and not a mistake.

  • Another yearbook shot. Taken my sophomore year IIRC. Scott Aschenbrenner (sorry if I misspelled that!) painting the face of a young visitor at an ice cream social held at Normandy School in Bay Village. This would have been about 1990 or 1991 I'm guessing.

  • Mandy and Miles. Miles as Matt's cat and Mandy was Steve's girlfriend. Since it's a solarized print there's no way to scan from the negative - and the print is in a mount that makes getting it on the scanner hard. So it's not a very good scan at all.
