Cleaning CVs

  • The axles fit best on certain CV's. So they're orieted to match the CV's they ride on smoothest in this photo. (That took some experimentation)

The CV in the lower left is a type-2 bus CV that came with the axles but matches the ones I have that came right out of a bus.

Above it is one of the other 2 that came from David with the axles and suspension - it has fine thread bolts that are a little thicker than stock. It was also marked 'R'.

The CV in the upper right came from David and also has thicker bolts, but has thick threads. It was marked L.

The CV that's disassembled is one that came off of the axles that came with the tranny I'm using which Rick pulled out of a bus himself and which appear to be original based on the grime layer I had to remove.

I'm going to have to modify 2 of the axle boots so the thicker bolts can fit through them.

  • Parts of a CV taken apart after cleaning. They're not THAT tricky to put together but it does take a bit of practice to figure out.

  • Note: the CV's pictured are not assembled correctly. Or at least the one on the left isn't.

  • These are from one of the CV's that came with my tranny. They may be original to the bus they came from. All of the CV's are worn to different levels...one is a little more worn than the others but it would be hard to pick one that's least worn.

  • The boots were as much each as I could get a set of 4 for online. But these are nice thick but supple rubber not the funky poly stuff the cheaper ones are made out of that I've had bad luck with on my swing axle. (I'll only run the rubber ones there too.) Hopefully these will last long enough to be worth the extra cost.

  • This was the first step of cleaning. Soak in the full strength heavy duty degreaser from harbor freight. Then with a brass brush for the outsides and a stiff nylon brush for the inside most of the old grease came right off. One of the CV's from David had a grease that was MUCH stickier than the others. All the rest were pretty much the same.

  • Rick had some CV grease he got at some point and offered for me to use. I picked up a new grease gun to dedicate to CV's and a needle fitting for it which is supposed to make packing these with grease easier.

  • These are the original axles that came with the transmission. The CV's from David were equally dirty as well.

  • The one with fresh grease showing is where the one pictured disassembled above came from.
