First try with Amy's Rolleicord

I finally got to try a roll of film in Amy's grandfathers old Rolleicord. The camera is older than both me and Amy put together. She had done a roll in it previously - but we didn't know how to work the film counter and tried to use the red filter to just read the back of the film paper. But alas - that just resulted in lots of fog on the film. Her shots were also pretty overexposed and we weren't sure if it was the shutter, her metering, or the confusing selection of F-stops and shutterspeeds on the Rollei. (It jumps from f/11 to f/22 with no f/16 for example.) The shutter may be just a bit slow...but over all it looks like the camera works great! Can't wait to try and print some of these.

  • Once again I ruined the first frame, didn't realize I had the shutter on T and it was open when I loaded the film. Then overexposed the first three frames about half a stop. Next two came out just about perfect (upper right) but then moved into the shadows and didn't compensate fully resuling in two underexposures.

  • This is kind of backwards....chronological order is LR - UR - LL - UL

On the far side of the bridge I got some shots of the nearby gauging station (right side) and then to finish off the roll two more bridge shots - finishing off with the low angle.

  • McPhaul bridge near Blaisdel. Just north of Yuma off Hwy 95. Northern approach. Falloff from the enlarger despite a fairly tight crop convinced me to wait until I had the right lens for my enlarger before going further with the print. But this is very close to what I was hoping for. If it wasn't for the bad vignetting I'd probably just about have the image I was aiming for. Starting to get the hang of my scanner too - this matches the print very well. Though the scan is a little softer.

  • First work print of McPhal Bridge. Was close but I really planned the exposure to make the wall to my left VERY light. And this was about 2 stops darker than I wanted. Plus the shadows were blocking up. I ended up going with a shorter exposure and was much happer. But then the effect of the enlarger lens being wrong was even more apparent.

  • The bridge goes across the remnants of the Gila river just a few miles before it reaches the Colorado. This shed is a short distance upstream next to what appears to be a USBR gauging station. The wires in the background appear to be power lines and are low enough you can almost touch them. The lens on that Rollei is pretty nice. I didn't even use the magnifier to fine focus since I was shooting at f/11. I look forward to my next chance to run a roll through this camera and open that lens up a bit to start working the depth a bit. For this roll I was looking to get a feel for what should be the lenses sweet spot for sharpness.
